This module explores the transformative potential of arts and culture as vehicles for self-expression and resilience-building among young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and/or neurodivergent. At the same time, it provides practical guidance for Creative and Culture Sector (CCS) experts and Mental Health (MH) professionals to collaborate effectively in designing and implementing inclusive, accessible arts-based interventions. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Understand the theoretical foundations connecting artistic practice to resilience development in young people with ID and/or neurodivergent, drawing on research from disability studies, positive psychology, and arts-based therapeutic approaches.
- Articulate how arts and cultural engagement addresses multiple dimensions of resilience, including emotional regulation, social connection, positive identity formation, sense of purpose, and adaptive coping strategies.
- Recognize the various barriers and challenges that may prevent young people with disabilities from accessing cultural and artistic life.
