This module introduces music therapy as an inclusive and relational approach that uses musical experience to support communication, emotional expression, and shared participation. It provides an overview of key concepts, methods and rhythm-based strategies that can be adapted for work with young artists with intellectual disabilities or who are neurodivergent. The chapter also offers practical examples and activities that facilitators can apply in group or individual settings to enhance engagement, co-creation, and wellbeing.
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Describe music therapy as a reflexive process grounded in musical experience and therapeutic relationship.
- Explain how rhythm, improvisation and shared music-making support communication, emotional regulation, and social connectedness.
- Apply selected principles from Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) to support attention, coordination, and sensory organization.
- Identify opportunities and considerations when implementing music-based activities in inclusive settings.
